The View Release

Monday, December 4, 2017

On December 4th, 2017, WFF released the 2017 edition of The View. The report entitled,“Women and Men Faculty, Yale University: A View of 2016-2017,” can be found here. This demographic snapshot of Yale has been produced every five years since 2002 by the Women Faculty Forum (previous reports are available on our website). This year’s report is authored by Paula Kavathas and Nancy Ruther and presents a snapshot of diversity in faculty across the university. Congratulations to the authors for all the careful work they have put into this report!

The report shows the gains made in university leadership (particularly administrative leadership and Heads of College) by women faculty since 2012 but a stagnation in numbers of URM (under-represented minorities) faculty and women with tenured appointments. The flattening in the fraction of faculty who are women between 2011-12 and 2016-17 is of particular concern. While there have been small gains in the number of tenured women in FAS (from 22% to 27%), overall across the university the numbers are not substantially different from 5 years ago. The report provides further breakdown of appointments by gender for each department.

We welcome comments and engagement as we continue the conversation about how best to foster diversity and inclusion at Yale. Please send them to wff@yale.edu.
