Gender and Violence: Time for Coordinated Global Action

Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
Friday, November 6, 2015

We were honored to host a talk by Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka entitled “Gender and Violence: Time for Coordinated Global Action” on Nov. 6th, 2015.  Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. A longtime champion of women’s rights, Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka has worked in government and civil society, as well as within the private sector, and was actively involved in the struggle to end apartheid in her home country of South Africa. She started the talk providing the numbers of women globally who have experienced violence in their lifetime (1/3) and the impact this has on both individuals and society.  Violence against women, Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka explained, is one of the most dehumanizing form of discrimination.  Efforts to stop this include legislation, data collection, leadership, education, economic empowerment, and media. The UN has a campaign to end violence against women and girls called “Orange the World”.  She spoke about the need to involve men and boys in this campaign and had “some tasks to Yale”.  These included sharing best practices, producing lawyers that understand issues of violence against women/girls, and scholarship on how best to create a culture of zero tolerance. The successful event was presented in coordination with the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” international campaign.
